Let God Guide Your Steps: Trusting Divine Timing Over Speed
In today’s fast-paced world, it’s easy to get caught up in the need for speed. We’re constantly bombarded with messages that push us to compete, hustle, and chase success at breakneck speed. As a creative person, I often find joy in creating and sharing my work. But when everything becomes about competition, that joy fades. The focus shifts from passion to pressure, and the process stops being fun. So, how do we move forward, especially when the world around us seems to be moving at lightning speed? The answer lies in letting God guide our steps.
The Shortcut Mentality
When we constantly seek shortcuts, we lose sight of the bigger picture. I remember when I was 20 or 21, back in university, trying to break into the music industry. I had experience with social media and all its tricks—like the follow-unfollow strategy. I was determined to get my name out there, and I did. But I also knew I needed help, so I prayed for a manager. Not long after, I received an email from someone offering to manage me. It felt like a sign from God.
At that time, I had adopted a mindset of trusting that God would provide what I needed as long as I kept moving forward. And He did. But over the years, I’ve learned something important about speed and success: speed isn’t inherently bad, but our relationship with it can be toxic.
The Danger of Compromise
God can make things happen for us quickly, but when we’re overly attached to speed, we risk compromising our values. How often have we heard stories of artists signing contracts that require them to water down their message, like doing gospel songs without mentioning Jesus? These compromises arise when we fear missing out, thinking that if we don’t seize an opportunity immediately, we’ll lose it forever. But that’s not how God operates.
The Lord recently reminded me that speed itself isn’t the issue—it’s about aligning with His timing. In my life, I’ve come to realize that nothing is worth achieving outside of God’s will for me. Rushing ahead on our own terms can lead to regret. How many times have we looked back at a decision we made in haste—whether it was about a job, a person, or an opportunity—and wondered, “What was I thinking?”
Trusting God’s Timing
God’s timing is perfect. He won’t give us something that will destroy us. When He blesses us, He also ensures that we have the character, strength, and foundation to maintain those blessings. Too often, we think we’re ready for success before we truly are. But God knows better. Sometimes, the very things we desire could hurt us if we’re not prepared.
As a parent, I see this clearly when I look at my daughter. She might cry for something, not realizing that I’m about to give it to her—I just need a moment to prepare it. Whether it’s cleaning a toy or preparing food, she doesn’t understand that the delay is for her benefit. How often do we behave the same way with God? We pray for something, and when it doesn’t happen immediately, we grow impatient. But God, like a loving parent, is preparing us for what we’ve asked for.
Focus on Growth, Not Speed
Instead of rushing ahead or trying to make things happen on our own, we should ask God, “What do you want me to learn in this season? How can I grow to be ready for what’s next?” When we trust in His process, we’ll find that the journey becomes easier. There’s no need to carry the weight of making things happen ourselves. When we let God take control, we can rest in the assurance that He knows exactly when and how to get us to where we need to be.
Conclusion: Follow God's Pace
This is the core message I want to share with you: speed is important, but only when it aligns with God’s timing. Trust His process. Sometimes it feels like we should have achieved our goals years ago, but there’s a reason for the pace at which He’s moving us. The more we trust in Him, the easier the journey becomes, because we no longer have to rely on our own strength. Instead, we can rest in the peace of knowing that God is guiding our steps.
So, if you’re feeling impatient or frustrated, remember that God’s timing is always perfect. He knows what’s best for you, and when the time is right, He will accelerate you in ways you can’t even imagine. Until then, trust Him, lean on Him, and let Him guide your steps.
